Cool season legumes like clover, hairy vetch, and winter peas enhance the soil by producing high amounts of nitrogen and reduce the cost of hay feed. These palatable, protein-rich plants have various levels of protection regarding erosion prevention, weed suppression and the building of soil organic matter. Clovers, including Mihi Persian, Yellow Blossom, Crimson, and Red Clovers do not compete well with weeds unless mowed, but they can prevent soil compaction and attract beneficial insects. Hairy vetch, like Vital Hairy Vetch and our proprietary Cahaba Vetch, is becoming increasingly popular as a hardy, winter annual cover crop with adaptation to many soil types. Austrian Winter Peas, on the other hand, are quick growing but best suited to lower temperatures and moist conditions.
