Interest has been growing in using short-season summer grasses as cover crops and green manures in vegetable production systems. Both Pearl Millet and Sudangrass perform well in hot, dry conditions and produce a large amount of biomass. As smother crops, they tend to be good producers of the residues needed to maintain soil organic matter levels. Weather conditions and practices that encourage good stands with early rapid growth are essential if they are to effectively out-compete weeds.
