United States - Cool Season Cover Crop Grass States

Cool Season

Annual Ryegrass, Cereal Rye, Winter Barley, Oats, and Triticale are among the most common cool-season grass cover crops. In addition to protecting and improving soil, these cool-season crops produce high yields of quality forage, suppress weeds through competition or allelopathy, and mop up available nitrogen that may be left over from fertilizer. The key to successful cool season cover crops is a quick and thick establishment obtained with proper timing, an evenly distributed seeding, and appropriate seeding rates.
